The Gap Fund To Support Climate Actions For Developing

The City Climate Finance Gap Fund (the Gap Fund) has authorized technical support for 33 cities in developing countries, covering a vital gap in funding for technical assistance to help cities turn their climate objectives into finance-ready initiatives.

Since its inception in September 2020, Over 140 declarations of interest were submitted by the Gap Fund, which authorized technical support for 33 cities.

The City Climate Finance Gap Fund (Gap Fund) assists cities in developing and emerging nations in achieving their climate goals by transforming low-carbon, climate-resilient concepts into plans and projects that can be funded.

The Gap Fund aims to raise at least 100 million euros in total funding, which will push more than 4 billion euros in investment for climate action in cities.

The Africa countries that secured Gap Fund for climate actions

Senegal

The capital of Senegal, Darkar, is one of the recently funded African cities. The Gap Fund grant will incorporate low carbon and climate adaptability factors into the plans, growth, and building of cost-effective and green shelters in the area, as well as by initiating an opportunity for property developers to obtain green building certification.

Morocco

Chefchaouen, in northwestern Morocco, is another city receiving funding. The Gap Fund will be used to assist the planning of research on low-carbon solid recycling programs, such as garbage sorting, biogas extraction, leachate remediation, and renewable power use like solar.

Uganda

The fund’s funding will enable research to be conducted on the existing garbage generation in the Ugandan town of Makindye-Ssabagabo. The award will also allow researchers to conduct a study to describe municipal solid waste using random and seasonal data, as well as assess treatment options for solid organic waste in this 360,000-person metropolis.

Cote d’Ivoire

In Côte d’Ivoire, the fund is helping to finance the installation of 600 low-carbon, solar minimum tricycle taxis in Danané, in the nation’s west.

These and some other countries have gained from the Gap Fund such as Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, and Fez in Morocco.
